I set off on my journey thinking that Pele was right when he said that an African team would soon win the World Cup.Once Africa got its act together, it would achieve many things and with its gifted footballers, lifting the Jules Rimet trophy would surely be one of them.
As I bicycled through the continent, I realised there were a lot of things wrong in Africa and, crucially, progress was not being made in dealing with them. In fact in many areas the continent was going backwards. Bob Geldof thinks the answer is to provide more aid. I think aid per se is part of the problem - not the solution. There is a debilitating dependancy culture in Africa which is exacerbated by much of the 'aid industry'. No country ever achieved anything on the back of aid.
As I was on a bike I had plenty of time to ponder and I tried hard to make sense of the countries I was passing through. I failed miserably but at least I managed to identify about ten reasons why the continent is going backwards. Each of these 'reasons' affected me personally in some way. My book is sometimes serious and sometimes lighthearted and should give food for thought to anyone interested in travel in general and Africa in particular.
Basil John Mandy was born in South Africa but is now an Englishman. he is married with two children and works for a large American food company in Consumer Affairs. He took a year's sabbatical leave to ride his bicycle from his hometown to his 'birth town'. By the time he got there he was so homesick that he vowed never again would he go long term travelling.
