‘The Cricket Match’ was written by Hugh de Selincourt (1878 – 1955). Selincourt was a prominent English author and journalist, best recalled for this iconic text; an idyllic tale of village cricket. Selincourt spent his university education at Oxford and later moved to a beautiful cottage, the ‘sand pit’ in the Sussex countryside. This provided inspiration for the highly traditional and bucolic ‘Cricket Match’, set in the fictional village of Tillingfold. Through a bird’s eye perspective, it relates the tales of various players, rising from their beds – all in different circumstances of life, to be brought together in one common purpose on the village green, only to disperse at nightfall. The chapters form enigmatic motifs such as ‘some players awaken’, ‘the morning passes’, ‘the teams assemble’, ‘tillingfold bat’ and ‘the evening passes and night falls.’ This book contains an author biography, briefly detailing Selincourt’s life, and makes essential reading for anyone interested in classic English literature.

Synopsis:
Through the medium of a cricket match the author endeavours to give a glimpse of life in a Sussex village. First we have a bird's-eye view at dawn of the village nestling under the Downs; then we see the players awaken in all widely different circumstance of their various lives, pass the morning, assemble on the field, play their game, united for a few hours, as men should be, by a common purpose - and at night disperse.
