Nur ausserordentlich spärlich sind die Reste, welche die Zeit von der altpersischen Sprache, abgesehen von den Inschriften, übriggelassen hat. Ausser zahlreichen, aber natür lich meist unerklärten Eigennamen, finden sich nur hie und da bei griechischen, römischen, hebräischen u. A. Schriftstellern vereinzelte altpersische Vocabeln nebst Bedeutung ange geben. Sammlungen davon haben unter anderen burton und paul bötticher DE lagarde] veranstaltet. Es wäre unmöglich gewesen, aus diesen kargen Resten Folge rungen zu ziehen, die uber das Allgemeinste hinausgingen Mit der Entzifferung der Keil inschriften hat sich dies völlig geändert. Die altpersische Sprache ist, wenn auch nicht vollständig, so doch hinreichend bekannt geworden, um ihren Platz im Kreise ihrer Ver wandten genau bestimmen zu lassen. Sie hat sich als Schwester der Avestasprache, als Mutter des Mittel und des Neupersischen erwiesen. Die Sprache der altpersischen Keil inschriften ist nicht dieselbe geblieben; schon unter Artaxerxes II. Verfiel sie. Man darf deshalb annehmen, dass sie bald nach dem Sturze der Achämeniden (333 v. Chr.) ausge storben, bezüglich in das Mittelpersische übergegangen sei. Grammatiken finden sich auch in fast allen älteren Bearbeitungen der Inschriften.
