Les deux premiers siècles de l'existence de Tombouctou nous sont complétement inconnus; cette ville ne semble pas avoir joué, pendant ce temps, un rôle d'une certaine importance, ni avoir eu des rapports étroits avec l'histoire des pays environnants, comme étant tout a fait à l'écart, par sa situation topographique aux confins du désert. Tom bouctou n'acquit pas même d'importance après avoir été conquis, au xive siècle par le royaume nègre le plus puissant alors, celui de Mellel, situé sur le réseau du Niger supé rieur, toutes les communications avec le Nord s'opérant encore par Walata; ce ne fut qu'à la chute de cet empire, accompagné de la ruine de Walata et de l'élévation rapide du royaume de Sonrhai, que Tombouctou commença à jouer dans l'histoire un rôle dont l'importance s'accrut en peu de temps. Ses annales se liant étroitement à celles des royaumes voisins, il est indispensable, pour connaitre le passé de cette ville du désert, de jeter un regard sur le développement de toutes les contrées du Niger en général; celles - ci offrent, du reste, une foule de particularités remarquables qui méritent bien de fixer pendant quelques instants notre attention.
