Excerpt from A Text-Book of Experimental Psychology, Vol. 2: With Laboratory Exercises
Exp. 2. The heat spots are to be sought for in a similar way over the same area, after the previously marked dots have been removed. These Spots are fewer, but their position may readily be determined by systematically exploring the skin with a finely pointed soldering iron previously warmed in water to about 45°c. The iron may be obliquely bored with a circular hole to receive a thermometer. The advantage of using so massive an instrument lies in its long retention of the heat imparted to it. The heat spots are to be marked and their position is to be indicated, in dye or ink of another colour, upon the tracing paper used in the previous experiment.
Exp. 3. Having selected a few exceptionally sensitive cold spots, the experimenter applies the heated point to one of them. He taps a second lightly with a very small round pointed Object, a bristle or a piece of wood. Into a third he thrusts a thin, finely pointed needle. He should take care that the stimuli both of the second and of the third spots are at the temperature of the skin. He should similarly investi gate the effect Of cold, touch and prick Upon heat spots.
