Excerpt from Wrought Iron Bridges and Roofs: Lectures Delivered at the Royal Engineer Establishment, Chatham; With Examples of the Calculation of Stress in Girders and Roof Trusses by Graphic and Algebraic Methods
In no case, perhaps, has more useless ingenuity been expended than in the production of cumbrous trigonometrical formula for the stresses in roofs, - formula applicable only to a condition of uniform vertical loading, and useless when the actual nature of the forces to which a roof is subjected is taken into account. The author trusts that in the discussion of the effect of wind pressure some real advance has been made, and that the examples of the beautiful graphic method of Professor Clerk Maxwell may prove of essential service to the designer of roofs. Graphic methods have hardly yet received, at all events in this Country, the attention they deserve. In cases like those of roofs they are most powerful, and their principle once thoroughly mastered, they are most facile and accurate in application.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book on structural engineering offers a comprehensive study of plate web bridges, also known as continuous web bridges. Primarily used in railroad construction, these bridges are characterized by their solid vertical memberā"a continuous, riveted plate, frequently reinforced with iron projections. The author provides a detailed examination of the design and construction of these bridges, exploring the principles of stress distribution, load estimation, and material selection. By delivering both theoretical and practical knowledge, the author assists engineers in optimizing the design of plate web bridges for various load requirements and span lengths. This book serves as a valuable resource for both seasoned engineers and students in structural engineering, offering a deep dive into the theory and practice of plate web bridge design.
