Synopsis

Excerpt from The Works of the Rev. Johnathan Swift, D. D. Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, Vol. 9 of 24: Arranged by Thomas Sheridan, A. M. With Notes, Historical and Critical

His Majesty sent for Three great Scholars who were then in their weekly waiting (according to the custom in that countrey). These Gentlemen, after they had a while examined my Shape with much nicety, were of different Opinions concerning me. They all agreed, that I could not be produced according to the regular laws of Nature, because I was not framed with a capacity of preserving my life, either by Swiftness, or climbing of Trees, or digging Holes in the Earth. They observed by my Teeth, which they viewed with great Exactness, that I was a carnivorous Animal; yet most Quadrupeds being an Overmatch for me, and Field Mice, with some others, too nimble, they could not imagine how I should be able to support myself, unless I fed upon Snails and other Insects, which they offered by many learned arguments to evince that I could not possibly do One of these Virtuosi seemed to think that I might be an Embry, or abortive Birth. But this Opinion was rejected by the other Two, who observed my limbs to be perfect and finished, and that I had lived several years, as it was manifested from my Beard, the Stumps whereof they plainly discovered through a magnifying-glass. They would not allow me to be a Dwarf, because my Littleness was beyond all Degrees of comparison for, the Queen's favourite Dwarf, the smallest ever known in that kingdom, was near Thirty foot high.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the tale of Gulliver, a ship's surgeon who finds himself shipwrecked on a fantastical island inhabited by diminutive people. The Lilliputians are only six inches tall and their world is a marvel of order and precision. As Gulliver navigates this strange new world, his adventures reveal the folly of political and social conventions. Along the way, the author satirizes the scientific community, human nature, and the limits of reason. Gulliverās Travels remains a classic of English literature, delighting generations with its absurd characters, surreal landscapes, and witty social commentary. It has profoundly influenced the development of the novel, particularly the science fiction and fantasy genres.
