Excerpt from The Truth About the Civilization in Congoland
Like every great cause, that which we serve in the Congo has had numerous martyrs.
To those who respect these manly traditions, I desire to address a few words, coming from my heart.
The task which the State agents have to accomplish in the Congo is noble and elevated. It is incumbent upon them to carry on the work of the civilisation of Equatorial Africa, guided by the principles set forth in the Berlin and Brussels resolutions.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book compiles a range of first-hand accounts, official reports, and expert opinions concerning the Congo Free State, established by King Leopold II of Belgium. Published in 1903, the text was a direct response to critical reports that accused the administration of tolerating or even promoting the abuse of local native populations in the gathering of rubber and ivory. The author presents contradictory arguments as to whether atrocities took place, and if so, to what extent they were sanctioned by the State. The book includes statements by many individuals who had worked in the Congo Free State, including missionaries, government officials, journalists, and missionaries. The author's main point is that, while isolated incidents of abuse did indeed occur, they were not part of any official policy and were in fact actively punished by the state. Nonetheless, the book makes clear that the Congo Free State was far from a model colonial administration. Overall, the author highlights the complexity and nuances of the colonial experience and challenges simplistic or sensationalist accounts of it.
