Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the complex interplay between monetary policy and governance in the late Middle Ages. The author examines the history of Basel's mint, tracing its evolution from a royal institution to a municipal one. Against the backdrop of Basel's political and economic development, the book analyzes the strategies employed by bishops and city officials to control the production and circulation of currency. It highlights the importance of the mint as a source of revenue and a tool for shaping economic policy. The author argues that the transition to municipal control of the mint was not simply a matter of power struggles between bishops and city councils. It was also driven by the need to address the challenges posed by a changing economy and the growing importance of trade and commerce. The book sheds light on the complex relationship between monetary policy and economic development in the late Middle Ages, offering valuable insights for understanding the role of money in shaping societies and economies.
