Excerpt from The Design of Diagrams for Engineering Formulas: And the Theory of Nomography
It is intended in this volume to present in a prae tical way the principles of the design of diagrams or nomograms for the solution of engineering and other formulas. The usefulness of a diagrammatic solution of a formula is becoming increasingly recognized and it is generally in proportion to the resistance of the formula to calculation and to the frequency of the application of the result sought. The aim of the present writing has been, therefore, not merely to give elementary methods of drawing simple diagrams but also to develop the grasp of the reader so that he will be able to analyze the more complex formulas of engi neering practice.
The entire subject would only be handicapped by attempting to avoid the use of the third order deter minants and consequently that notation is introduced in the third chapter and continued throughout the book. A sufficient treatment of determinants is given in Appendix A and is indispensable to those who are not familiar with that branch of college algebra.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a practical guide to the principles of designing diagrams, known as nomograms, for solving engineering and other formulas. The author emphasizes the growing importance of this method, especially for formulas that are complex to calculate and frequently used. The text goes beyond basic diagram-drawing methods, delving into the analysis of more complex engineering formulas, and utilizes the notation of third-order determinants for a more thorough understanding. While the author acknowledges the potential use of projective transformation, the book focuses on a more accessible approach and includes a dedicated appendix explaining determinants for those unfamiliar with this aspect of college algebra. The book introduces a new class of diagrams called "Diagrams of Adjustment," which are more general than traditional alignment diagrams and can be used for a wider range of formulas. The text explores the theoretical framework for incorporating scale factors and units of length into diagrams, ensuring practicality and enabling readers to create useful designs. The author includes numerous illustrative examples, avoiding trivial instances and providing detailed explanations for more complex cases. The book explores the advantages of representing formulas diagrammatically, including the immediate determination of any variable's value and the ability to analyze the rate of variation between variables. The author's extensive experience teaching this subject highlights its value as a supplementary course in applied mathematics and drafting. Overall, this book serves as a comprehensive guide to the field of nomography, offering readers the tools and knowledge necessary to effectively utilize this powerful method for solving engineering formulas. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
