Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 3
With the learning oi languages it must be the other way. The aural way of entry is far more graphic and effective than that of learning out of books: in the one the personal element is stronger, in the other the scholarly treatment is supreme the one is the commerce of the market, the other the practice of the student and the Don. The present teaching of classics is as though no man ever spoke them; indeed, this really is, in a sense, true. I doubt whether one schoolboy in a hundred knows that there were two 'latins'-the book form in classical manner of Cicero, and the popular form of Terence - the one the language of the law courts, and the other the common talk of the street. I don't think that any English boy believes that Latin was spoken as we English talk to one another.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book considers the place of modern languages in a secondary curriculum, exploring the place of these subjects within the wider field of education. The author argues that the current system, with its focus on classical languages, is inadequate to meet the needs of students in the present day. He advocates for a shift towards a curriculum that prioritizes modern languages, particularly French, as a means of providing students with essential linguistic skills and a broader understanding of the world around them.
