Synopsis
This book on Shakespeare's work takes issue with a previously published volume which seeks to emend the text of Shakespeare's works by referencing purportedly newly-discovered corrections in a second folio edition. The author carefully examines these emendations and notes and argues that many of the changes proposed are unnecessary or incorrect, and that some are even harmful to the text. The author notes that numerous more-recent critics have suggested similar changes: a fact they believe weakens the case for the notes and emendations being authentic. The author also discusses the broader issue of the treatment of Shakespeare's works over time, specifically referring to the tendency to 'correct' or alter his language to make it seem more modern or palatable to contemporary audiences.
