Cest avec raison que Tail-lasSOn, dans ses Observation sur quelques grands peintres, a dit en parlant de Paul Véronese: Fécond daas ses idées, il a bien moins de raison que d'imagination; il a peu de sensibilité, et ses expressions sont rarement vives et justes. Il composait, habillait, ajustait ses figures selon les caprices de son gout,ettout lui paraissait bon lorsque son œil était flatté. Ses ordonnances en effet, comme compositions pittoresques, ont du mouvement, sont très agréables aux yeux; mais comme compositions poétiques, elles ne satisfont jamais l'esprit. Se laissant facilement aller à la fougue de son imagination, il semble devenir plus bizarre en raison de l'importance ou de la noblesse de son sujet. Cependant, plus il y a de figures dans ses tableaux, plus ils en imposent par l'ensemble de la scene et la richesse des accessoires. Sa touche, ferme et rapide, tient de celle de Téniers, rend la nature avec beaucoup de justesse et de feu: son coloris est vigoureux et brillant; il est encore rehaussé par des draperies de soie de conleur écarlate, et souvent enrichies de broderies d'or.
