Excerpt from Canada This book is the first of a series of Readers dealing with the British Empire (British Empire Readers). It will be followed by volumes on Australasia, India, the Union of South Africa, the Crown Colonies, etc., with a concluding work on Great Britain, and a supplementary reader devoted to the United States, all of which will be published by Herrn Moritz Diesterweg of Frankfort-on-the-Main. There are now over 15,000,000 white inhabitants in the British Empire outside of the mother country. This number is growing by about half a million yearly, and the ratio of increase is rapidly augmenting. The British over-seas dominions and colonies must therefore no longer be regarded by foreign students as negligible quantities, and in their studies of things English they would do well not to limit their attention to Great Britain, but extent it to Greater Britain. It seems superfluous to observe that the United States are of as great importance in this respect as the British Empire. The numbers in the text refer to authors quoted or otherwise utilised. Their names and works will be found in the Appendix (pp. 129 -131). Copious use has been made of various provincial government publications which have often been quoted verbatim at length. My thanks are clue to my friend Mr. Douglas Carpenter, Berlin, for his valuable assistance in revising the proofs.
