Excerpt from Through Starving Russia: Being the Record of a Journey to Moscow and the Volga Provinces in August and September 1921
Soon far exceed, even the most deliberately sensational descriptions that have been writ ten of it. It is a calamity more dreadful than any other of its kind that has ever overtaken a European country. Though it has as yet scarcely begun, it is already almost too horrible for comprehension. A huge part of Russia, containing a population of some thirty-five million men, women, and children, has harvested barely a month's supply of food, which is all that they have to support them until next autumn, when the next harvest becomes due. For reasons explained in this book, it is very likely that the 1922 harvest also may be a failure, in which case the extent Of the catastrophe will be almost beyond computation. All the European and Asiatic countries bordering Russia may be drawn into the grip of hunger, disease, and disorder.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Through Starving Russia is a vivid account of a solitary journey into the heart of the Russian famine. The author, a skilled observer with first hand experience of Russia, reached the country in 1921 and ventured into the stricken areas without the supervision and guidance of the Bolshevist authorities. What he discovered was a catastrophe of incomprehensible proportions, with millions facing starvation and death. The author traveled by train and river steamer, visiting towns and villages, and speaking with countless people who had been stripped of everything by the famine. In the countryside he found peasants and refugees living in makeshift tents, eating grass and insects to survive, and dying in vast numbers. Through Starving Russia is a haunting record of human suffering on an almost unimaginable scale. It sheds essential light on one of the 20th centuryâs most devastating humanitarian disasters, and offers a profound and thought-provoking examination of the intersection of revolution and famine.
