Excerpt from Remarks on the Use and Abuse of Some Political Terms This book was the first, or nearly the first, literary attempt of its distinguished author, having been published by him in 1832, at a time when he was only 26 years old. He lived till 1863, combining eminent services to the State with most remarkable literary activity, in the course of which, however, he never thought fit to revise and republish this production of his early manhood, nor does it appear to have reached a second edition. No mention of it occurs in his published letters; but as the same may be said of all but one or two of his numerous writings, no inference could be drawn from this alone as to his mature judgment respecting it. It is a more significant fact that, in his much later and more elaborate work on the 'Methods of Observation and Reasoning in Politics, ' he not only never refers to the earlier treatise in places where it would have been natural for him to do so, but incorporates a considerable portion of its matter, in a condensed form and stripped of the illustrations, in a single chapter, entitled 'The Technical Language of Polities'; a proceeding which certainly conveys the impression that he either wished or expected the 'Use and Abuse' to be speedily forgotten.
