Excerpt from Notes of a Tour in America: From August 7th to November 17th, 1877 "The following Notes of a Tour in North America will probably contain nothing new, and, it is to be hoped, nothing in the nature of adventure. They will pretend to no literary merit: they will be written for their writer's amusement and future reference. If the proprietor of The Cambrian thinks they will interest his readers, they are much at their and his service." Such was the prophetic preface despatched from Canada with the first of these Notes, and as I believe the prophesy has been realized in all particulars, a few words only of explanation to the general reader need be added as to how and why they had any existence, and are now reprinted almost verbatim.
