Brainshaugh (Mr. Cook) is near the river, and Morwick stands by it. This, Camden says, may also boast of its Lords, whose male issue was extinct about the year 1258, and the inheritance was conveyed by daughters to other families. This estate was left by the last Lord Grey to Henry Grey Neville, Esq., and, failing him and the heirs of his body, to the Greys of Howick. It is tenanted at present by a younger brother of the house of Howick, whose character is worthy of the antient family to which he belongs. Mor is the antient British word for sea, and wick is known to signify a town or seat, so that Morwick may possibly be no more than Seaton, a town or house by the sea, or can Morwick be Moor-wick, the town near the moor. r He built the mansion house at Felton, to which he removed about 1735, since which time the old castellated building at Long Horsley has been used as a Roman Catholic Chapel, and a residence for the officiating priest. a In 1722 Edward Manners, Cresswell Manners, and Benjamin Manners, of Acton, voted in respect of freehold property in lhat township. John Manners, of Framlington, voted for a freehold at Newmore House. In 1744 Benjamin Adams voted for property nt.
