But, on behalf of the Independents and the army, Colonel Pryde "purged" the House by forcibly expelling therefrom many of the i648. obnoxious Presbyterian members. This summary act is known in history as "Pryde's Purge," and to the remnant of members, which were left sitting, was applied the odious name of "The Rump Parliament." The Rump arraigned King Charles as a traitor, and, with Bradshaw as presiding judge, they tried and condemned the unfortunate monarch, and brought him to the block before his own palace of White Hall. His decapitated remains were in-1649. terred at Windsor. In this reign there was a serious insurrection in Ireland, in which the Catholics mercilessly massacred great numbers of their Protestant fellow-countrymen (1641).
