Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXXVII. CHRISTMAS. Christmas at the Abbey! A real old-fashioned Christmas outside, with a sharp frost and a sprinkling of snow, and a bright sun shining upon the many lovely crystals which hung to the branches of the tiees. Inside the Abbey there were grand preparations going on for Christmas cheer. I doubt if the old kitchen even in the days of the Abbots had ever seen more extensive preparations. "Such a party were expected. It almost takes my breath away to count them," Mrs. Fenn said, "but count them I must, and write them down on the white slate, or I shall be forgetting some one." Christmas Eve was to be held as the feast day, because many of the expected guests could not be absent from their own homes on Christmas Day. For whether in a palace or a cottage, every one likes to sit down to their own board on Christmas Day. It was early on Christmas Eve, then, and the day was yet young, so that Mrs. Fenn had plenty of time before her. Besides, a good housekeeper like Mrs. Fenn has everything ready to her hand when the time comes to use it. The materials are all there, and the great feature of the day, the puddings and the mince-meat, have been ready for a week at least. There was to be a supper in the large hall at six, and this was the grand event of the evening. To make ready for this the rest of the party gathered together in the library, dined with the children at one o'clock, and little Harold sat up by his mother's side in the high chair with a face beaming with delight; and there were Hugh and Douglas, and Miss Tyndale, and Mr. and Miss Merivale, and Gladys and Mabel.
