Before I actually point out the many evils of our present system of education to which the attention of the public and that of the responsible authorities should be drawn almost everyday, I think I should say that I am. neither of the school of Nil Admirari nor of the Nil conscire sibi. I am both a humble admirer and a critic. I am not one of those who will ignore the many inestimable blessings which our universities have conferred upon us so profusely--the blessings which have made us what we are to-day. To realise this, let us simply take into our consideration the benefit which we have derived from our universities in the shape of the English language itself.-It has not only unfolded a rich and glorious treasure of beauties--the history, the oratory, the poetry/ the science and the high standard civilization of the West, but has united the different races of India--the vast conglomeration of this great Peninsula--into what is almost a compact and homogeneous mass. It has preached the gospel of.liberty in this country and brought for us new hopes and aspirations. A common language is a tie which binds (hearts to hearts, minds to minds. It is something which fosters and developes the harmonious growth of a nation. It-is a holy, tabernacle of unity--a glorious sanctuary of. harmony and concord within the consecrated walls of which a nation, composed of different races, varying in creed and caste, can stand as one people, with one aim and ambition. In our country the vernaculars are different in different provinces and so the people of one would meet the people of another as aliens, no matter that they are of the same nationality, if there have been no common language to come to a common understanding.
