"Look at this, what a book" - Malky Mackay in the South Wales Echo on 30 November 2013. The Journey Back, Cardiff City's rise through the divisions 1991 to 2013 is a chronicle of, arguably, the most dramatic period in the Club's History. The nineties saw more of the struggles which had characterised much of the previous two decades. Occasional promotions were followed by the inevitable tumble back to the League's basement division and there were times when even a further relegation seemed a distinct possibility. The new Millennium saw dramatic changes under new owner Sam Hammam however. Two promotions in three seasons followed as Cardiff made a return to the domestic game's second tier for the first time in eighteen years. The huge sums spent on transfer fees and wages to get there however meant that much of the next decade saw star players having to be sold to try to balance the books. This led to a feeling that things were having to start from scratch each season as promising sides lost at least one influential player every summer. Despite this, the team was gradually improving and in 2008 they reached the FA Cup Final. From that point onwards, Cardiff were consistent promotion challengers, but they also became experts at finding ways to miss out on that elusive Premier League place. Not even the move to the new Cardiff City Stadium from Ninian Park could provide the settled financial backdrop the club needed. Indeed, the first season in the new stadium saw the taxman taking the club to court for unpaid bills. Finally, a year later, Cardiff made it to the top flight for the first time in fifty one years! Each of the twenty two seasons covered by the book is given a chapter which consists of a review of that campaign backed up by statistical analysis including team line ups from each competitive game that year. With sixteen pages of colour photos and black and white pictures throughout, The Journey Back is a must have for any Cardiff fan!
