Since the early 1970's Dr Jayasuriya has been associated with international and regional drug control activities and from 1996-1 999 he served as the Chief Technical Adviser to the United Nations International Drug Control Programme covering South Asia and the Central Asian Republics. His last position with the United Nations was in 2004 as the head of a UN agency in Pakistan. In Sri Lanka, Dr Jayasuriya has served as a Senior State Counsel and as the Chairman of both the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Insurance Board. On anti-money laundering issues, Dr Jayasuriya has served as a Member of the UN Panel of Experts for the drafting of model legislation and has conducted training programmes and guest lectures in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka for financial service lawyers and bankers. Dr Jayasuriya is the author of 20 books, 15 monographs and over 200 articles.
