This educational tale of the migration, mating, and nesting habits of a pair of robins as they raise and care for their young will delight parents, teachers, and children. Beginning with the welcome return of the robins in early spring, simple language and beautifully detailed colored-pencil illustrations reveal exactly what is happening in those nearby but hidden nests. Included are kid-pleasing details, such as the fact that a newly hatched robin equals the weight of one nickel, and that each robin can eat up to 14 feet of earthworms a day! A glossary, breeding-season time line, and tips on helping injured or orphaned baby songbirds make this book as practical as it is charming.

From the Author:

Wildlife training and backyard sleuthing = "Robins" book
Have you ever splinted a House finch's leg with a toothpick or washed an oiled Canada goose in a tub of soapy water? Maybe you're more the type who tiptoes around your backyard with notebook and binoculars, hoping for the rare early-morning gilmpse of a robin building her nest with twigs and mud. No? Well somebody's got to do it or we wouldn't be able to share with our kids such titillating facts as: Baby robins can eat 14 feet of earthworms in one day. Or: If you grew at the same rate as a robin, you'd weigh 90 pounds by the time you were 10 days old! Call me crazy, but I think this stuff is really cool. Illustrating The Robins In Your Backyard gave me an excuse to study "skins." That's the technical word for dead, stuffed robins. While skins are not very animated, at least they don't hop off and fly away! I loved working on this book. Now I share how I made it with school children - who like seeing the skins as much as I do.
