As a child, cartoons were magical. But I wanted to do more than just watch cartoons, or read comics, I wanted to make them. When I was a kid there weren’t any classes and there were only a few books on cartooning, so for me learning became a trial and error process. I did learn how to draw cartoons and have drawn thousands of them over the years. When I had a chance to teach cartooning as an artist in residence, I discovered that I could teach nearly anyone to draw using a few simple shapes. My students didn’t have to use the trial and error process I went through, they learned right away! These simple methods became the core of my teaching which led to the first three editions of Cartooning Basics. Students really liked Cartooning Basics and even wanted even more lessons in new areas. With this edition students get all the good stuff from the past plus over 400 new drawing examples and all new lessons on perspective drawing, comic strips and animation. Comments from students and teachers indicate that these additions are well received and will make learning even more fun. As for me, I am still teaching, and drawing from my studio in Minnesota. About the Author

Duane Barnhart started selling cartoons professionally in the 1960’s. Since then, his cartoons have been published in Saturday Evening Post, MPLS / ST. Paul Magazine, and many others. He has drawn a national daily comic strip, weekly editorial cartoons, and advertising cartoons. He has designed print, and computer video products using Disney and Loony Tunes characters. In 1997, Duane and his wife, Angie, wrote CARTOONING BASICS, an award-winning how to draw book, and in 2004 the Barnharts completely revised and expanded their book. As a roster artist for the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Duluth Depot, Duane visits dozens of schools each year teaching cartooning to thousands of students in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and beyond.

Angie Barnhart has worked alongside her husband, Duane in their Minnesota bases cartooning and graphic design studio for over 20 years. During this time she has produced many publications and illustrations as a successful graphic designer and illustrator. When not in the studio, Angie visits schools libraries, and art centers teaching cartooning techniques to the next generation of cartoonists.
