Synopsis

What is Compassionate Conservatism?

David Cameron has made compassionate conservatism a priority for the Conservative Party, famously saying that "there is such a thing as society; it's just not the same thing as the state."

But what is compassionate conservatism? What vision of society does it offer to inspire and guide future policy making? And what does it have to say about the challenges that face Britain today?

These are the subjects explored in this provocative and thought-provoking book.

Review

As Jesse Norman argues eloquently in a new book, Compassionate Conservatism, published by Policy Exchange, the Cameroons' think tank, the Tory leader is gradually building up a political identity based on the idea of a connected society, in which wellbeing is more important than wealth and the common good matters as much as individual rights. --Rachel Sylvester, Daily Telegraph, 13 June 2006

Superb ... What the Conservatives need now is not re-branding but an actual philosophical and policy basis for action. This book brilliantly provides that basis. It shows not just why the Tories are ready for government again, but why Britain needs them - badly. --Andrew Sullivan, author, blogger and Sunday Times columnist

The book everyone in Westminster is talking about. The Observer, 18 June 2006 The intellectual guidebook to Cameronism. The Sunday Times, 5 November 2006 --The Sunday Times, 5 November 2006
