Synopsis:
Think 'Bridget Jones meets Moby Dick'. 'I knew we were in trouble the moment our knickers, which are pegged to the mast, started flapping in completely the wrong direction', writes Sally. And so begins her epic ocean adventure. With no rowing experience and certainly no sea-going experience, Sally Kettle took to the oars in her ocean rowing boat, Calderdale, in 2003. Fate, however, had other plans, and when illness beset her then boyfriend and team-mate she was joined on-board by an unlikely partner, Sarah Kettle, her mother. After years of arguments and misunderstandings they set off from the Canary Islands in a boat the size of the average bathroom with nothing to do but row, watch whales and grow cress. They passed the hours with the kind of chit-chat that only girls are capable of, discussing the merits of a good pair of cotton knickers, playing eye spy and reading stories to each other at bedtime. When they landed in Barbados 105 days later they became the world's first mother-and-daughter pair to row an ocean, having rowed 3,000 miles across the giant Atlantic to the West Indies.

In the course of their row, they raised over GBP250,000 for an epilepsy charity, and earned their place in the Guinness World Records 2008. It brought them closer together, and in the confines of their tiny boat, Sally and her mother managed finally to reconcile their past. "Sally's Odd at Sea" is an inspiring, hilarious and real-life account of a daughter and mother's exceptional journey across the high seas, and Sally's subsequent attempt to cross the Atlantic as skipper of the all-girl Rowgirls team.
About the Author:
Growing up in Northampton, Sally Kettle lived about as far away from the ocean as you can possibly get, which is surprising as she now speaks and writes about her adventures at sea. After completing a theatre degree at Brighton University she decided a 'normal' job was not for her, so she set out to row an ocean with her then-partner, Marcus, in October 2003. When circumstances took a turn for the worst she ended up making the Atlantic crossing with her mother, Sarah. Eighteen months later Sally set out to break another record as skipper of a women's four before tragedy struck and her crew had to struggle for survival in some of the harshest Atlantic Ocean conditions ever recorded. She has tales enough to tell of freak waves, unrelenting storms and encounters one would rather not have on a boat, but it is her experiences of people that provide inspiration and insight for all. Sally now lives in Kingston upon Thames with her fiancé, Clint, and her dog, Burt.
