From the Author:

This is the story of the Clanranald Regiment during the Jacobite rising of 1745 and 1746 and of the men of Arisaig, Canna, Eigg, Moidart and South Morar who sacrificed a way of life to aid Prince Charles Edward Stuart in a futile attempt to regain the throne for his father James.

The MacDonalds of Clanranald had fought and died before on behalf of the Stuarts, most notibly during the campaign of the Marquis of Montrose in 1644 and 1645; under Viscount Dundee at Killiecrankie in 1689; and under the Earl of Mar at Sheriffmuir in 1715. This final campaign culminating in the disaster at Culloden on the 16th April 1746 ultimately resulted in the end of the clan system, which had existed for centuries.

The clan regiments bore the brunt of the fighting during the '45 and none more so than the Clanranald Regiment, which was present at all the major engagements in the front line where the best men were to be found.

The Clanranald Regiment was by no means the largest in numbers, but it can rightly claim to have played a more significant role than any other. The Clanranalds were the first to rise in support of "Bonnie Prince Charlie" and among the last to lay down their arms. It was in no small measure due to members of the regiment that Prince Charles was able to evade capture after Culloden and ultimately escape to France.

Many contemporary accounts give a picture of the campaign and the major part played by the MacDonalds of Clanranald. The State Papers show the devastating consequences for the common men many of whom died or were transported to the colonies.

This book sets out to highlight the major role played by the highlanders in the campaign and in particular the MacDonalds of Clanranald.
