From 10 June 1940, when Fascist Italy entered World War II on the German
side, to 25 July 1943, when the dictator Mussolini was overthrown by a
palace coup, only six Allied prisoners of war managed to escape from the
country.
By contrast, in the last 20 months of the war over 5,000 escapers and
evaders reached neutral Switzerland and more than twice as many crossed
Allied lines within Italy. At the time the region was a battleground
between Germany, the reborn Fascist State and the Allied powers.
Many servicemen were rescued by the escape and evasion secret services of
British and American Military Intelligence. But, as the author reveals, the
majority of the escaped prisoners of war and downed airmen were saved by
Italian civilians and members of the Resistance. 'What counted most was the
kindness of strangers.'
