Book Description MacKay, J, Scotland, 1998. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. P/B, 6" x 8.25", 204 pages, condition is very good, an owners name label to the flyleaf. This is an account of the development of roads in the Scottish Borders and adjacent areas from Roman times to the present day, with particular emphasis on the great strides which took place in the second half of the eighteenth century. It was then that Turnpike Trusts were formed to plan and build what was to become the basis of today's road system. All the major roads of the area, and many of the minor ones, are covered in detail, showing how they evolved and were changed to meet the challenges of modern traffic. The second half of the book deals with the forms of transport which were used on these roads prior to the introduction of the railways from the 1840s onwards. All the stagecoach and mailcoach routes and the coaching inns which served the area have been included, as well as an account of coach-building in Edinburgh. Seller Inventory # 059975
