Philippe-Auguste, Comte de Villiers de l'Isles-Adam, was born at St Brieuc, Britanny in 1838. He came from an ancient impoverished and eccentric family, fervently Catholic and steeped in chivalric tradition. He lived mostly in Paris, making literature the sole object of a vagabond existence, and suffered atricious poverty until his death in 1889. His writing has a powerful poetic quality, concealing a mystical philosophy beneath an ornate and extravagantly decadent romantic style. Axel is the epitome of symbolist drama, and gave its name to the definitive work on decadence and symbolism, Edmund Wilson's "Axel's Castle".
