Synopsis

Old London: Strand to Soho by Walford, Edward

Synopsis

The area surrounding the Strand has always had a theatrical and aristocratic flavour. The river at this point was lined with palaces and great houses. The name of the Earl of Essex is still commemorated in Essex Street. John Evelyn the diarist, lived in Villiers Street. St Martin in the Fields is one of London's best know churches. The fact that Nell Gwynn, John Hunter the anatomist, and Jack Sheppard the highwayman, are amongst those buried in its churchyard speaks volumes for the cosmopolitan nature of the district. Soho had many literary, artistic and aristocratic associations, in contrast to its present day reputation, and together with Leicester Square has perhaps the most curious history of any district in London with royalty, emigres, merchants, artists and aristocrats all living in its narrow streets and great houses.
