Synopsis

This work begins by reviewing and dismissing the typical misconceptions of surrender. It explains how surrender is primarily an acceptance of Christians' creaturehood and then focuses on surrender as a choice people make repeatedly no matter what the circumstances are: in suffering, in pleasure or in joy, or in prayer itself. The book draws heavily from Scripture as the perennial source of the spiritual life and from the great Christian classics. The author writes in an anecdotal style that invites readers into a personal and intimate relationship with God. His basic assumption throughout the book is that a relationship with God is the foundation of the spiritual life. At the end of each chapter is a prayer experience that can be used by individuals or groups. These aim to help readers to understand the content of the book in a more meaningful way. A list of suggested resources should also further assist in an appreciation of surrender as a spiritual discipline.

From the Author

A description of content & purpose of book
My book SPIRITUAL SURRENDER is the fruit of over twenty years of work as a spiritual director and retreat leader for Christian clergy and laypeople from many denominations. The book begins by looking at and dismissing various false understandings of surrender, and by focusing on surrender as both a choice we must make repeatedly, and a fundamental life stance that undergirds all our choices. It involves an acceptance of our limitations as imperfect creatures, and a willingness to "let go and let God", to borrow a phrase from the twelve step programs. The book then considers the meaning of spiritual surrender in suffering, in pleasure and in joy, and in our life of prayer. It draws heavily on scripture, and on some of the great classics of Christian spirituality. I use numerous real life examples to illustrate my points. The book also looks at the ways and reasons why we resist surrendering to the God who loves us, and then closes with a positive reflection on that final opportunity for surrender, death. Each chapter offers a suggestion for prayer, to help the reader connect more personally with what has been discussed. I believe that spiritual surrender is the path to greater life, love and joy, and it is my fervent hope that this book will facilitate the practice of spiritual surrender for all who read it.
