Synopsis
Authored by Russian and American historians, nine essays that examine the experience of Russian workers at the center and on the peripheries for the period 1840 to 1917 are presented by Melancon (history, Auburn U.) and Pate (history, Columbus State U.). The papers do not come at the material from any shared theoretical viewpoint. Specific topics are child industrial labor and laws, workers and the Russian Orthodox Church, collective psychology and self-organization, the conceptions of self evidenced by worker poetry, the Petrograd factory committee movement and its discourses, and the dynamics of the Smolensk metalworkers' strike.
