Not your typical railroad book
I wrote this book because my passion is, and always has been, diesel locomotives. Although this book contains a great deal of technical information about BN's locomotives, its framed by many of my own experiences while working for BN between 1976 and 1983. I love a good story. And I'm captivated by people, how they relate to railroads and, in particular, locomotives. So I filled this book with stories about railroad people: engineers and shop people, railfans and industry observors. In my opinion, it lends the book a warmer, more personal approach than most railroad books. It's also filled with what I consider to be striking & interesting photos. I'm a photographer as well, so I took special care to pick what I thought were the best images to represent 25 years of BN locomotive development. And because BN itself is the result of a merger between four older railroads, the book contains a rainbow of colorful images, not just the BN green you might expect. From a technology viewpoint, the book discusses such topics as the reason why BN retires locomotives, the development of AC traction motor technology, fuel tenders, yard slugs, cabless units and several oddball experiments. One thing you can say about the development of BN's diesel fleet: it was never dull. If you groove to diesels like I do you'll also be interested in two other books published by Kalmbach: Diesel Locomotives, the First 50 Years (which covers diesels built from the 1920s to 1971) and The Contemporary Diesel Spotters Guide (which covers diesels built between 1972 to the present day). Both of these books are factual and informative with detailed photos to help you understand and spot the spectrum of North American diesel locomotives. End
