Fundamentals of Petroleum is designed to give an overall view of the petroleum industry in terms that can be understood by the layman as well as the professional. This book does not cover all procedures and equipment used in the industry, nor does it give detailed descrip-tions of oilfield operations. Rather, the authors and editor, mindful of its purpose, tried to include general, useful information while minimizing technical details. To help the reader understand industry terminology, A Dictionary of Petroleum Terms, also published by the Petroleum Extension Service, is highly recommended for use with this book. Fundamentals of Petroleum is used as a text for the School of Petroleum Fundamentals conducted by the Petroleum Extension Service at its training centers, for courses sponsored by the Association of Desk and Derrick Clubs, and for numerous petroleum-related college courses. The first edition was based on an outline from the Association of Desk and Derrick Clubs. With the help of the ADDC Education Committee, who furnished industry reviewers for the text, this third edition was compiled by members of the Petroleum Extension Service staff. Incorporated in the new edition are the many comments and suggestions made by students, teachers, and readers of the first and second editions. It is our sincere hope that this effort will meet the needs of people outside the industry who are interested in petroleum, as well as those in the industry, especially members of the Desk and Derrick Clubs everywhere. Their desire for knowledge is the stimulus needed by our staff whose job is to develop training aids for the petroleum industry. Mildred Gerding
