"Me and Steve Martin": Reflections from (Another!) Author
Anyone working in the business of helping children and families will tell you that they got into it to make a difference - never to write a book. So to be on the same footing as the like of comedian Steve Martin, commenting on "our books" on a web site, is both a colossal joke, and a frightening prospect.
"Aftermath" was written as the book we wished we had available to us, but could not find, when we began to work with traumatized children. Between us, the authors had over 150 years of clinical experience, but none of us felt prepared for the overwhelming challenge of helping children recover from the impact of abuse in a residential or foster care context. This book was written for people just like us... responsible for the overwhelming task of guiding childrens' healing process after abuse, and who wished to do it as well as possible. We found we needed clear, sensible and practical guideposts on our journey, so as we discovered them, we wrote them down. We hope our readers find our discoveries in supporting child healing to be as useful to their work as we found the process of researching, experimenting, refining and writing eventually was to ours.
But mostly, we hope you enjoy meeting the foster parents and children whose lives and experiences humble us every single day. It is their stories we chronicle, and their lives that we honor.
We look forward to hearing from you, and to hearing about your own "journeys of discovery".
