"My subject is food, which concerns everyone; it is health, which concerns everyone; it is the soil, which concerns everyone-even if they do not realize it-and it is the history of certain recent scientific research linking these three vital subjects." So wrote Lady Eve Balfour in her introduction to the original edition of The Living Soil, a foundation book in the field of ecology and the work which virtually launched what has come to be known as the organic movement. At the time it was first issued (I943)ß this book presented the then-revolutionary ecological concept that "the nutrition cycle is not merely a transfer of nutrient materials from one form of life to another, but also a circuit of energy." Part One of this 1976 publication consists of the original seven chapters, which Lady Balfour has especially edited in order to meet the strong and increasing demand for a republication of this important source material. The Haughley Experiment, the first farmscale ecological exploration into the relationship between different concepts of land use and agricultural practices, and the nutritional quality of the resulting crops, came into existence as a result of the evidence presented in The Living Soil. Two full cycles of agricultural rotation were conducted at Haughley, in Suffolk, with a unique consistency in the treatment of the land. The organic movement is a contemporary success story but the seeds of its success were sown as early as the 1930s and 1940s, when a group of scientists, farmers and doctors raised challenging questions about the relationship between farming methods and human health. Their concerns about the impact of intensive agriculture on food quality and the environment challenged the prevailing orthodoxy and remain as relevant now as they were then. Eve Balfour's The Living Soil made an international impact during the Second World War and inspired the founding of the Soil Association in 1946.
