Interfaith Tidbits For Everyone, to Enjoy Every Day
When I first started putting The Soul's Almanac together with stories, prayers and wisdom drawn from the world's spiritual traditions, I had no idea that Leo Tolstoy, my favorite writer, did virtually the same thing 90 years ago. He too wanted a book of quotes to read for daily inspiration and refreshment. It took Tolstoy nearly 10 years to complete his daybook, even with his vast wealth and noble connections.
Today we live, blessedly, in what I call the Age of Interfaith. The spiritual/religious teachings of the world are far more available to us. And my aim, in writing The Soul's Almanac was primarily to offer a reasonably complete Interfaith menu--from Aboriginal to Zoroastrian--in one table setting.
I had a great deal of fun with this book. Many of the stories are so juicy or deliciously funny that I often turned to my wife, Madhuri, and said, "You've got to hear this one." Now, she (raised a Christian and for 20 years a devotee of a Yoga path) and I (the son of Holocaust survivors and an Interfaith Minister) read The Soul's Almanac every day with our 8-month-old daughter Sari.
Here is a sampling of response received in the first month the book has been out. My friend, Huston Smith, author of The World's Religions, offered, "Congratulations." Stephen Mitchell, noted author/translator of The Tao Te Ching, Etc., said simply, "Thanks." Numerous friends and colleagues told me that the book is great and that they're reading it every day. My Mom called Madhuri and declared, "My son's a bright boy."
Now what about the two most important people and how they feel about The Soul's Almanac? Sari is enthusiastically taking the book in--literally. So far she's mouthed a couple of the corners off and it appears the book, at least for her, is easily digested. Madhuri states, as a matter of fact, that "Everybody wants this book."
