Colonel Gruff leads a group of teddy bears on an expedition to discover the real, live bear that may be their ancestor

PreSchool-Grade 2-- As in the earlier "Teddy Bears" books (Peter Bedrick), Great Expedition is full of colorfully clothed, ink-drawn fuzzy bears tumbling through the pages, engaged in lively activities. This time a very pompous Colonel Bear, in pith helmet and khakis, takes a motley group in search of a real live bear. The bumbling colonel leads the way through forest, field, and mountain turning up rabbits, a mountain goat, a donkey, and, at last, a bear--in the zoo. This slight, lighthearted adventure is charmingly illustrated with colorful endpapers and a series of double-page spreads that feature the jolly teddies. The fast-reading text, mostly of conversation among the bears, and amusing details in the illustrations will be appreciated by adults who read the story aloud. --Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ
