The works represented in this book are state-of-the-art video installations, each a separate and carefully delineated environment created through multimedia technologies. The viewer enters these spaces and becomes a part of what he or she observes. These works demonstrate the range and sophistication of an art form born in the last decades of the 20th century. The eight installations described and illustrated here have been produced over the last three years by an accomplished international group of artists and will be displayed at an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. The artists are from Europe, Japan and the US. Barbara London provides a history of the development of video art and of the interaction of the new media with the traditional visual arts and with film, dance and performance art. Samuel Delaney, an award-winning science fiction writer and critic, draws parallels between science fiction and this art form. The book concludes with exhibition histories for all the contributing artists.
