Synopsis
As an uneasy peace settles over war-scattered Beirut, a woman reflects: who would she have been if she had not witnessed bonds of friendship turn in to animosities, and decent human beings transformed into villains? Her memories intertwine with readings in history, newspaper headlines and television reportage. She remembers the stories of revenge and retaliation she once tried to escape, and finds herself drawn back to them, as events - past or present - in Bosnia, Rwanda or Argentina remind her of the tragedies that shaped her life. What has she achieved in her voluntary exile, and what would have become of her if she had stayed? Would she have learnt to forgive, like Umm Ali, or harboured revenge, like Leila's grandmother? And who was Said? A gentle grocery boy or a blood-thirsty torturer who terrorised entire neighbourhoods? In this seamless tapestry of personal reminiscence and imaginative reconstruction, historical document and ethical investigation, Mai Ghoussoub reminds us that Beirut is everywhere.

About the Author
Mai Ghoussoub is a sculptor and writer. Born and brought up in Beirut, she is now based in London, where she works in publishing. She is a regular contributor to international journals and conferences about culture, aesthetics and Middle Eastern issues.
