John Macmurray's aims were radical, ambitious and challenging to reexamine the western philosophical tradition and call into question both its origins and inheritance. John Macmurray (1891-1976) was Professor of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh University for many years, and author of an acclaimed series of Gifford lectures entitled The Form of the Personal, which represents the clearest statement of his ideas and for many his highest achievement. His Freedom in the Modern World, originally published in 1932, remains an enduring work of twentieth century ethics.
