Synopsis
The title of this book, the first written by a Mission Commander of Special Operations Executive, comes from Churchill's directive in July 1940. No allied armies were in the field on the continent of Europe; the spirit of resistance from outside in 'ungentlemanly warfare. The author describes his experiences in Sudan and Ethiopia and in Central Europe before the war, and how he turned them to account when he found himself plunged into clandestine operations in the 1940's.
