Synopsis
An account of the Soviet manned space programme from the earliest projects, such as Vostok 1, to the present Salyut 7 and Mir which illustrate their dominance in this field. It looks forward to a new generation of heavy launch vehicles and the Soviet shuttle which promise to push them further ahead in the space race, and a possible mission to Mars before the year 2000. The author considers the Soviet presence in space to be one of the decisive factors in the balance of power between East and West and his book attempts to offer insights and analysis to those wanting to understand its origins, direction and future significance. The author has written numerous analyses of Soviet manned operations which have appeared in the "Journal of the British Interplanetary Society" and "Spaceflight".
