The book includes an analysis of the role of trade unions in the former Soviet system, and explores the development of the workers' movement in Russia since 1987.

Simon Clarke is Professor of Sociology at the University of Warwick. Peter Fairbrother is Professor of International Employment Relations at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Michael Burawoy is Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley.
