However, the blurring of the images by use of metaphor, as well as their incompleteness, suggest undertones of repression in Rossetti's psychology. Kaplan says: "Most obviously the blurring can be seen as a form of both conscious and unconscious censorship; it is also...the result of sexual ignorance." According to Kaplan, this combination of sexual rigidity and ignorance contributes to the effects of the poem, which, due to its specific nature and lack of social context, is primarily erotic. Although its beginning engages immediately with its central erotic theme, the poem ends on a social note, for the two girls are married and are mothers.
