Butler is the John Edward Fowler Distinguished Professor of Law, Dickinson School of Law, Pennsylvania State University, Professor Emeritus of Comparative Law in the University of London, and Director, The Vinogradoff Institute, Pennsylvania State University. He also serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the Russian Association of Maritime Law.
