This book is intended to replace Dalwick's "The Gambia", for long the vade mecum of Gambia collectors, but which after thirty years was showing its age. Many discoveries have been made in these thirty years; in particular, the De La Rue records have become available; and there has been a shift in the mainstream of philately, towards postal history. Perhaps one might say that much more is understood today about how and why the stamps were used; rather more about where and when they were used, and a little more about which stamps were used.

The layout of this book is traditional: a chapter is devoted to each issue of stamps and the period when they were in use. Each chapter contains, as far as possible: details of the origin, printing, design, date of issue, varieties, numbers etc. of each set, followed by notes on rates of postage, and other matters of postal history interest. Inevitably these are incomplete. Some aspects of the stamps - proofs, specimens, forgeries - have been kept separate, being mainly of interest to specialists in those fields. Separate chapters have been given to Airmails, Cancellations, T.P.O.'s, Village P.O.'s, Postal Markings, Military Mail, and Postal Stationery.
