This publication consists of an annotated bibliography on soil and shifting cultivation in tropical countries, organized into three main categories: the effects of shifting cultivation, including studies on the cropping period, fallow period and deterioration of the system, as well as geographical, economic and anthropological aspects; sustainable low input alternatives to shifting cultivation, including alternative crops or cropping systems; and low input alternatives for the rehabilitation of degraded land. It should provide a valuable source of information for research workers concerned with agriculture, ecology and conservation of tropical ecosystems.
